About the Item

This is an Antique & Unique Sarkoy (Sharkoy or Şarköy) Kilim rug from Western Turkey with a rare and beautiful color composition. Sarkoy kilims are very finely woven in slitweave in a variety of sizes and are made in one piece. Many feature the tree of life composition that is often used in a multitude of repeats on large kilims, and singly on smaller sizes. Birds also regularly appear either as filler motifs, border designs, or depicted sitting on the branches of the tree. Other motifs include stylized leaves, either on the Tree of Life or incorporated into a leaf and vine border pattern. Trees, birds, and leaves are also found enclosed by small prayer arches arranged in rows down the field of the kilim, or sometimes as a border pattern. Prayer arch kilims were also woven, as well as some designs with hooked diamond-shaped medallions. Sarkoy motifs are very stylized, although figurative, and often resemble modern-day computer graphics. The colors are dark red, blue, and green, with a little yellow and white. More modern kilims tend to feature a harsh bright red, black, and white, although the weaving is still very fine. One type of Bulgarian Sarkoy kilim has serrated medallion patterns and a color palette of brown, beige, or yellow, dark and light blue. Again, many sizes are woven in one piece, and these are of a squarer shape than most Anatolian kilims.
