About the Item

This is a beautifully detailed old Malatya Region, Anatolian Chuval kilim, featuring a bold, three-dimensional texture and precise geometric patterns. Originally used by nomadic tribes as a storage bag for transporting grains and household items during migration, chuvals were also symbols of wealth. As such, they were often adorned with elaborate decorations and woven in vivid, eye-catching colors. This particular piece was once used for that functional purpose, yet the decoration is so exquisite that it feels almost too beautiful to have served as a utility item. Woven with extremely fine threads, the weave is dense and intricate, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship. The jijim embroidery is delicately and evenly applied, creating a rhythmic and refined visual effect. Though modest in size and nearly square in shape, this kilim has a commanding presence. It is small in scale but rich in character and impact.
