This vintage hand carved and hand painted musical clock is unsigned, but presumed to have been made in or near Austria in circa 1950 in a Folk Art style. The carving depicts a male figure leaning against a post mounted Black Forest styled clock. The carving is quite detailed and well executed on all sides and has been hand painted in a realistic style. Both the clock and the music box are currently not working as both have been over-wound and would require servicing. The head of the carving should turn slightly left to right while the music box is playing, but in its current state it is unknown whether the mechanism functions and/or what tune the music box may play. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years. Blue lady with her handbag- mastertwork from Eva Fritz-Lindner. A serene tall handmade and hand painted sculpture of a lady carrying her handbag named EMA - a friend of the artist- e handcrafted and hand painted in beautiful blue colors. On bottom atelier mark i 3 D and with tree (black brush mark). Ema was the late Eva Fritz-Lindner's (1933-2017) good friend. Designer/maker: Eva Fritz-Lindner with stamp i3D, circa 1960-1970. Glaze: Light and dark blue matte colors are bright and vivid and the hand painting only adds to the charm; light original glaze crazing appropriate for age. Additional comments: Most of her larger sculptures were likely produced in less than 100 copies based upon research and all were hand painted individually by this artist ensuring each work of art was indeed unique. Dimensions: 12.5 inches high. Handmade / handarbeit and hand glazed, few survive. Provenance: Old German collection. About the artist: The bold folk art sculptress and ceramist Eva Fritz-Lindner (1933-2017) studied at the Werkkunstschule Wiesbaden and Darmstadt and was a master student in the sculptor class by Erich Kuhn. From 1955 she worked as a master designer at the Staatliche Majolika-Manufaktur Karlsruhe where she created and designed several hundred highly regarded ceramic folk art animal sculptures and unique wall and garden works of art inspired by nature and possibly the local zoo at Karlsruhe. Owls and family concepts were a particular specialty. During this time she created designs for building and garden ceramics, vessels and small sculptures. Since 1964, the sculptress worked as a freelance artist in her own studio in Karlsruhe-Durlach. The artist designed important works in the field of building ceramics, including wall designs in mosaic, in Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden, Schwäbisch Gmünd and Göppingen. Of particular note, she created enormous scale owl sculptures for the palace gardens in Karlsruhe in 1967 (see photo). In 1962, Eva Fritz-Lindner was awarded the silver medal at the Prague International Ceramic Exhibition. The artists' ceramics are owned and located in the Hetjens-Museum Düsseldorf, in the Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art...

Large 11 1/4 x 6 in. Medium 7 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. Small 5 3/8 x 5 3/8 in. An ingenious and unusual wooden and metal wire rod trivet from the Finnish designer Kaija Aarikka. The Aarikka design house is over 50 years old, started in 1954 by Kaija Aarikka who, as a textile design student, was unable to find suitably attractive buttons for a suit she had created for a final assignment. She decided to carve her own - and was surprised that her five buttons turned out to be the star of the day. That same year she and her husband founded their company, called Aarikka Oy, and opened their first sales outlet in Helsinki. In the ensuing years the company has focused on creating unique decorative and household designs showcasing local Finnish materials - which entails quite a bit of birch wood. The wooden circles are echoed by the circular wire loops at the end of each row of rings.
