About the Item

This seldom seen bank is technically a mechanical bank but basically it is a still bank with a slight mechanical function, that being; once it is full of coins, it opens up automatically; much like a "Lighthouse Bank" which is catalogued as a mechanical bank. It was designed and manufactured by Leon Cameto, a Pioneer collector of mechanical banks during the 1940s and 1950s, who put together one of the best and most extensive collections of mechanical banks in his era. Located in Oakland, California, he also was a foundry owner and was acutely interested with the ins and outs of banks. This was his creation and I purchased it directly from his estate in 1984. A marking label appears on the underside of the bank attached to the log, which includes the name of the bank "Lincoln Bank". It is practically mint; in the box, and purchased by me in an unopened box. I only just recently opened it up. There is some paper loss to one side of the lithographed end of the log (see image). The bank simulates a large log resting on a makeshift stand of smaller branches with a log woodcutting saw in place and an axe resting on top serving as the coin slot. The bank is hand painted with oil paint in realistic earth tones of green beige and brown with a silver saw and an orange axe handle. The particulars of the bank are stated on the box attesting to it's genesis. This is a welcome addition to a collection of banks; the original box makes it all the more appealing.  Dimensions: 8 1/4" long x 4" wide x 7" high. Vintage Children's Toy Savings Bank "U.S. Mail". American, Circa 1920
By A.C. Williams Company
Located in Incline Village, NV
Children's Savings Coin Bank "U.S. Mail" bank , also known as a "still bank"; was American made, circa 1920. This is well made, sturdy, and all original. It is made of cast iron and hand painted in original green paint with gold highlighting. There is no repaint and no restoration. The coins were deposited through the "letter depository"; lift the lever and drop in a coin (see image). When the bank is full, coins are removed by undoing the original square nut in back and the screw in front. Cast into two parts and now separated, the coins are easily collected. Put back together again to insure parts don't go missing (which happened often) and original screw and nut are maintained. This bank was manufactured circa 1920 by the A.C. Williams Company, Chagrin Falls, Ohio. They made many cast iron toys, banks and other products during their time of operation until World War II. The "U.S. Mail" bank is referenced on page 102 #853 in "The Penny Bank Book" by Andy and Susan Moore...

American Mechanical Bank "Melody-Bank, " circa 1946
Located in Incline Village, NV
"Melody-Bank" is a rare bank and was manufactured by "Electric Coding Machine Co., N.Y.C." in 1946. American made, this is a genuine and authentic vintage mechanical bank, albeit somewhat later, having been manufactured in 1946. It maintains all of the elements of a collectible antique mechanical bank; pleasing shelf appeal and wonderful musical action. The metal faux textured, green painted casing on five sides is fronted by cardboard on wood, filled with delightful images of "children at play with money" lithography. To operate: Wind up the mechanism by turning the brass dial in front clockwise; then put a nickel, dime, or quarter in the appropriate slot at the top. Music will play as additional lithography depicting children's nursery rhymes rotate on the interior circular dial ("Little Boy Blue", "Mary Had A Little Lamb", etc.). Coins are removed by unscrewing the metal plate at the rear bottom. Bank is in excellent all original condition with fully operable musical mechanism. Dimensions: 7" high x 4 9/16" wide x 3" deep. "Cat Boat" Mechanical Toy Penny Bank, American, circa 1968
By Utexiqual Products
Located in Incline Village, NV
In near mint and all original condition this vintage mechanical bank appeals to both sailing enthusiasts and bank collectors; perhaps a collector of "cat" memorabelia as well. The theme depicts two sailors riding their boat in full sail. It is quite substantial in both size and weight. To operate, (with the lever pushed all the way in from the left); place a coin vertically above the left arm of the sailor in red; from the right; push the lever all the way in. The sail and Boom hits the sailor, knocking him over as the coin drops into the bank. The other sailor moves forward while manning the tiller. The bank is named "Cat Boat...
