Mexican Folk Art Woodcarving Alebrijes Jaguar Wagon Folkloric Art

About the Item

This bold piece by Manuel and Ruby, a master artisan husband and wife team, represents a lifetime of dedication to the art of wood carving. With this piece, they give you the feeling of waking up in a faraway place where you have new power and energy to become a mythic storyteller. This astonishing work of art gives your home that sense of renewal you feel after traveling, a reminder that the world is larger and more mysterious than the one you call home. Revered in history by indigenous Mexican civilizations, the jaguar is a symbol of bravery and success. Everything is its prey, and it is prey to no one. Centuries after the arrival of Catholicism, reverence of the Jaguar has not entirely disappeared among indigenous people. In this part criticism part entertainment piece, Manuel not only portrays the sacredness of corn as the “origin of life,” he also presents a shift in tradition and spirituality. Materials and technique Used by the mystic cultures of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica and gathered from the Southern Mountain Range of Oaxaca, local farmers bring the aromatic copal wood to the Cruz family workshop for its use in artisan wood carving. Considered sacred by the Zapotecs, copal takes only five years to grow, and its easy reforestation makes this art form environmentally sustainable. Master artisan husband and wife team, Manuel and Ruby Cruz, work for 2 months to complete this stunning piece. Within the team, Manuel gives movement and expression to the wood, first by using the machete for the main parts and then smaller knives for the fine touches, and ends by sanding and polishing the final details. Ruby then takes over and lets her imagination flow, painting the piece with bright colors and transforming it into a jewel for the eye to see. Origin Made in Oaxaca, Mexico

Mexican Folk Art Wood Carving Traditional Dance Handmade Alebrije One of a Kind
By Ruby Fabian, Manuel Cruz Prudencio
Located in Queretaro, Queretaro
The young dancers wear an armor of threads over their bodies, showing off an ancient indigenous art form. Colorful thread combinations characterize the huipil dress, a rectangle of cloth handwoven on a backstrap loom that dates back thousands of years in used in Zapotec culture. Through symbols in their dresses, Zapotec women wear their identity, history, culture, power, social and marital status, religion, personality, and power. In this folkloric dance, “Flor de Piña” (Pineapple Flower), innocence surrounds young girls as they dance and hold pineapples on their shoulders as an offering. Their long braids represent purity and their bare feet symbolize their connection to the Earth. This folkloric dance is part of the “Guelaguetza” (name in the indigenous Zapotec language) Festival Celebration. Since pre-hispanic times, the indigenous people of Oaxaca have honored the goddess of maize with this festival, performing and offering gifts to ensure a good harvest. Husband and wife, master woodcarver Manuel Cruz and wood painter...
