About the Item

Antique Ceremonial Limar Ikat Textile, Palembang, South Sumatra This ceremonial limar textile was used as a waist or shoulder cloth by ethnic Malay people living in south Sumatra, and is patterned in weft ikat and supplementary gold-wrapped thread. It is a particularly old example, and is comparatively larger than most. It is missing its two end panels due to damage, but the rest of the textile is in remarkably good condition. The ikat patterning in five colors is exceptionally fine, and the gold-wrapped thread is in excellent condition. Mounted on a wood stretcher frame with acid-free substrate. 1880~1910.
