About the Item
Antique Lawa Woman’s Ikat Skirt Cloth, Thailand
The Lawa people are a relatively small animist/Buddhist ethnic group (est. pop 17,000) living in the mountainous region of northern Thailand. Their textiles are quite rare, and good examples of earlier ikat-dyed textiles are not often seen in the market. This indigo dyed, ikat patterned woman’s wrap-around skirt was found in Chiang Mai in the mid 1980s, and was 20-30 years old at the time. It is composed to two panels, stitched in the middle, and dyed in the warp-ikat technique. In excellent condition.
