About the Item
Antique Man's Ceremonial Head Cloth (Iket Kepala), South Sumatra
Malay people, Palembang region
A beautifully subtle weft ikat ceremonial head cloth with elaborate silk chain-stitch embroidery and couched gold-wrapped thread. This gold-wrapped thread can be seen in the upper right and lower left corners (see photo j). The couched thread is in tact, but most of the gold has worn away. There has been some loss of silk embroidery, which is not unusual for a textile of this age. Otherwise, the textile is stable and in tact, but it is old, and made of silk, and is therefore somewhat fragile. A rare, early example of a man’s head cloth.
