Antique Panel from Young Girl’s Skirt, Myanmar (Burma)

About the Item

Antique Panel from Young Girl’s Luntaya-Acheiq Hta-mein (skirt), Myanmar (Burma) Skirt panel of interlocking-tapestry woven silk in shades of pink, mauve, cream, light blue and indigo from the Amarapura region of central Myanmar. The layout is of horizontal bands of repeating geometric patterns, including wave, zig-zag, diamond and stylized motifs. The panel is complete, but when used would have been bordered on all sides by wide bands of silk, and backed with cotton. Interlocking-tapestry weave is a complex weave structure that was likely imported from India in centuries past, and luntaya acheiq has long been associated with the traditional court textiles of Myanmar. Collected in Myanmar in 1998. Mounted on wood stretcher frame with acid-free substrate.
