Antique Panel from Young Girl’s Skirt, Myanmar (Burma)
About the Item
Antique Panel from Young Girl’s Luntaya-Acheiq Hta-mein (skirt), Myanmar (Burma)
Skirt panel of interlocking-tapestry woven silk in three shades of jade green, purple, reddish pink, cream and white. The layout is of horizontal bands of repeating geometric patterns, including wave, hook and stylized floral elements.
The panel is complete, but when used would have been bordered on all sides by wide bands of silk, and backed with cotton. Interlocking-tapestry weave is a complex weave structure that was likely imported from India in centuries past, and luntaya acheiq has long been associated with the traditional court textiles of Myanmar..
Collected in Myanmar in 1998; from the Amarapura region, central Myanmar.
Mounted on wood stretcher frame with acid-free substrate.
