About the Item
Tapa dance shield.
Baining People, New Britain, Papua New Guinea.
First half, 20th century
Pounded mulberry bark painted with natural pigments
Measures: 7 1/2 feet high (approx) x 26 ins wide (225 x 65 cm).
Provenance: Loed von Bussel, Belgium (a notation written in ink on the inner bamboo framework states “coll. V.Bussel. Bayning/New Britain). Von Bussel acquired the work from a Catholic missionary museum in Blonried, reportedly collected in situ by the bishop.
These shields were attached to poles and worn on the back of ceremonial dances. For further reference, see Carl A. Schmitz, Wantoat Art and Religion of the Northeast New Guinea Papuans, (Mouton & Co., 1963).

Among the Asmat, war shields are the most powerful symbolic element of a warrior's equipment, and have many layers of meaning. Traditionally, they were functional items used to protect warriors in battle by deflecting an enemy's spears and arrows.
