Antique Tribal Dayak Plaited Rattan Longhouse Mat (Tikar), Kalimantan
The tightly woven longhouse sleeping mats of Kalimantan are almost exclusively constructed by women, who begin their rattan plait work from one corner and work outward until the mat is completed. A characteristic design of the Kayanic mats of east Kalimantan and Sarawak (Malaysia) display a precise checkerboard pattern in a diagonal orientation, with a repeating traditional (Punan) motif scattered across the central field of the mat where the dark and light squares intersect. Defining the center field is a subtle yet detailed inset border around the edge of the mat composed of squares and triangles, also only visible where the dark and lighter squares overlap. Very well constructed and in excellent condition.
