About the Item

Antique Woman’s Silk Tie-Dyed Kerchief (chabot), Cambodia This small, graphically intriguing resist-dyed textile was made by the Cham people of Cambodia, a muslim group with historic ties to Malay culture. It has shared similarities with the plangi textiles of south Sumatra, but most Cham silk resist-dyed textiles have a more uniform design layout and a richer tonality from the use of deep greens, blues, yellows and reds. This piece is complete, evident from the four corners, and was likely used as a kerchief of some kind rather than a head scarf, due to its smaller size and rectangular form. Natural dyes.
