About the Item

Expressive, interesting African Baoulé mask from Cote d'Ivoire from last third of the last century, carved from wood painted polychrome. The face is narrow & elegant and has a thoughtful expression. The color captivates with its intensity, the face is saffron yellow, the antelope is rather lemon yellow, the accents in the face were set by an almost black color. The lips of the mask are accentuated in light gray. This African Baoule mask, portrait mask with an idealized character, features scarifications called “Ngole” and animal decoration on the head. This portrait mask of Baoule Ndoma has the peculiarity of appearing at the end of dance ceremonies. Each of these masks is distinguished by the hairstyle, location and choice of scarifications, they embody graceful young girls or men whose bravery or integrity is known.
