About the Item

Rare Antique Woman’s Abaca Fiber Tube-Skirt, Philippines The Subanen are an indigenous people living in the mountainous interior of Zamboanga del Sur on the Zamboanga Peninsula in western Mindanao. Much of their clothing over the past century or so has been made of imported cotton cloth and is heavily influenced by neighboring Muslim groups. They are known, however, to have had an earlier tradition of weaving warp-ikat patterned abaca fiber, one in which both the motifs and the weaving process has been shrouded in secrecy within Sabunen communities. Very few examples are found in Western museum collections. Early 1900s, very good condition. Width: 26.75 inches, Height: 32.5 inches
