About the Item
Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors in addition to his famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. In the painting ""The Art of Painting"" a beautiful golden chandelier is displayed above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers permitted artists to demonstrate their expertise at rendering shimmering and refractive brass under changing light conditions. A true testament to their craft and artistry.
The single-tier Vermeer 116 chandelier, which displays the trademarks of 17th-century Dutch craftsmanship, creates a strong impression with its 74 cm wide brass frame and 12 gently arcing arms. The brass fixture is hefty at about 60 cm high, yet the curled embellishments that spiral around the circumference give it a delicate appearance. This antique chandelier brings to mind the sparkling candle-lit halls of the rich during a time when lavish lighting was highly sought after to brighten Europe's palaces and mansions. The Vermeer 116, which has been updated for contemporary use, pays homage to Holland's former Golden Age today.
Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric crowns have bent hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly inserted.
