19th Century Grand-Tour Roman Hanging Oil Lamp

About the Item

This decorative early 19th-Century Grand-Tour, Roman hanging oil lamp is a copy of an original found in Pompeii. Mercury, the god of trade, thieves and travellers, is depicted in the centre of the lamp. In many depictions, he is shown as a young man with the staff of Hermes and wings on his feet, symbolising his swift mobility. As a symbol and protector of travellers, Mercury was a much sought-after souvenir in the 18th and 19th centuries. Lamp is not for lighting, decorative purposes only. *The original text is in English.
