About the Item

Rare aluminum, brass and glass chandelier, c1850, hand-forged aluminum with brass accents supports two former oil lamps with glass shades. First produced in 1825, aluminum was very difficult to extract making it more valuable than gold. Bars of aluminum were so precious they were displayed at the Exposition Universal of 1855 and Napoleon III, Emperor of France, was said to have given a banquet where his most honored guests used aluminum utensils while his other guests had to make do with gold! N.P. Trent has been a respected name in antiques for over 30 years with a large collection of period furniture, art and decorative accessories.
