Art Nouveau French Wrought Iron and Opaline Glass Chandelier

About the Item

Please take the time to read the entire description, as we aim to provide detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our items. This fascinating and unique French chandelier embodies the perfect Art Nouveau style. The frame is made of wrought iron with a dark finish that evokes the furnishings of the Art Nouveau period, featuring recurring curvilinear decorations typical of the movement. Three iron plate spirals support the light fixtures, adorned with beautiful sandblasted glass embellished with floral reliefs, characteristic of the era. The lower part of the round structure is covered by an exquisite sandblasted glass panel with refined decorations. A lamp holder is positioned above it, allowing the light, along with the light from the other three glass panels, to diffuse softly, discreetly, and with a gentle glow. A system of chains and six iron tubes connects the chandelier to the ceiling, with the saucer where the six tubes meet also being hammered. The electrical wires from the various lamp holders run externally along the tubes before connecting to the ceiling. It was likely made between 1920 and 1930 in a small workshop on the outskirts of Paris, during a time when the Art Nouveau style was particularly fashionable. The glass has a matte finish with raised patterns, perfectly in line with the Art Nouveau aesthetic. The floral reliefs indicate intricate craftsmanship, likely achieved through pressing in molds and subsequent sandblasting. The glass bears the "Ros" mark, although there is limited specific information available about a "Ros" mark related to period glass. It could be a signature from the maker or designer. The overall craftsmanship and the presence of raised decorations suggest a special and high-quality production. The Art Nouveau movement (known as Liberty in Italy) originated in the late 19th century and flourished primarily between 1890 and 1910. In France, it was a reaction against the academic and industrial styles of the time, drawing inspiration from the organic forms of nature and the idea of a "total art" that combined architecture, applied arts, and decoration. One of the leading aspects of French Art Nouveau was the creation of refined metal and glass objects, including lamps, vases, furniture, and jewelry. Artists sought to combine aesthetic elegance with functionality, often using decorative motifs inspired by nature, such as flowers, insects, and sinuous lines. Art Nouveau began to gain prominence in 1889 with the Universal Exposition in Paris, and in 1895, the opening of the Maison de l'Art Nouveau in Paris marked a key moment in the movement’s expansion, showcasing innovative designs and art objects. In addition to the Maison de l'Art Nouveau, Paris also saw the rise of workshops specializing in luxury goods, where skilled artisans crafted prestigious objects of unique aesthetic value. Art Nouveau in France was distinguished by its pursuit of "total beauty," where even everyday objects were transformed into works of art. The movement influenced craftsmanship, architecture, and design until the outbreak of World War I, which brought an end to its dominance, but left a lasting legacy in contemporary design.
