French Art Deco Lunaria Pendant Chandelier by Edmond Etling

About the Item

French frosted art glass original Art Deco bowl shaped pendant fixture produced by the renown Parisian firm of Etling. A frosted white molded glass shade featuring an honesty / monnaie du pape pattern is suspended by a nickeled bronze armature, France, 1920s. The honesty plant Lunaria with its translucent moons is beautifully depicted in this stylized rendition by Etling. In Dutch the plants is known as Judaspenning after the thirty silver coins given to Judas Iscariot for his betrayal of Christ. In the States they are referred to as “silver dollars” and in France, “monnaie du pape”. Edmond Laurent Etling owned Béranger gallery in Paris and also owned Edmond Etling & Cie foundry. The majority of his glassworks were produced at Cristalleries et Verreries de Choisy-le-Roi Réunies, on the outskirts of Paris. La Societe Anonyme Edmond Etling commissioned artists with designs that he crafted and then offered for sale in his gallery. Some notable artists he worked with were Demétre Chiparus, Claire Colinet , Marcel Guillard , Maurice Guiraud-Rivière , Fanny Rozet, Lucille Sevin, and others. He also collaborated with Aurore Onu , Marcel Bouraine , Pierre Le Faguays , Raymonde Guerbe and André Vincent Becquerel on the casting of their sculptures. Etling's work is short lived as he began around 1909 and in 1940 had to close his business during the German occupation of France when he was sent to a concentration camp where he perished. Etling played an important role with the development of the Art Deco style. It was during the height of the Art Deco movement when he had the vision to promote, engage and serve these significant decorative art designers as well as create his own unique pieces for future generations to cherish. Holds three candelabra sockets for either LED's or incandescent bulbs . Can be custom lengthened or shortened or plated for a surcharge.
