About the Item
This exquisite 29" diameter brass chandelier embodies the elegance of Viennese Modernism from the 1940s, designed by architect Hugo Gorge in the 1930s. (We have matching sconces/wall lights in stock; please see listing LU1015240597212.)
Expertly crafted, its sculptural form features a gracefully curved brass frame suspended by woven strings, accommodating five light sources with conical lampshades. The lampshades have been meticulously refurbished with off-white beige silk fabric, preserving their original dimensions.
The chandelier is in very good condition, with a beautiful patina on the brass. It has been professionally rewired and is ready for worldwide use.
The total drop height is 66", including a long chain that can be easily shortened. The chandelier itself measures 33" in height, which is also the approximate minimum drop height. Upon request, we can adjust the drop height to your preferred specifications.
Hugo Gorge (1883 - 1934) was part of a circle of architects and designers alongside Josef Frank and Oskar Strnad. Gorge's educational journey began at the lower secondary school in Troppau, where he studied from 1893 to 1897, followed by the State Industrial School in Brno until 1901. Between 1906 and 1908, he audited courses at the Vienna University of Technology, and pursued studies under Friedrich Ohmann at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1907 to 1910. Joining Ohmann's studio as a collaborator in 1909, Gorge later served as an assistant to Oskar Strnad at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts from 1911 to 1912. He obtained authorization as a civil architect in 1933. Gorge's portfolio included designing interiors and constructing numerous residential and commercial buildings in Vienna. In 1932, he contributed to the Werkbundsiedlung in Vienna with a double residential house. His design ethos favored simple ornamentation, positioning him as an early advocate of modernism in Vienna alongside Adolf Loos and Josef Frank.
