Maratus Sculptural Horsehair and Bronze Pendant Lamp by Isabel Moncada

About the Item

Maratus Sculptural Horsehair and Bronze Pendant Lamp by Isabel Moncada Dimensions: Ø 165 x H 90 cm. Materials: Bronze, brass and horsehair tassels. Weight: 14 kg. A chestnut horse with a white tail is called Palomino, it is dashing and atypical. This lamp is an allegory of its sumptuous presence. The vintage finish accentuates the volume and vigor of the bronze pieces that make up this skeleton with shiny translucent strands of natural horsehair. This pendand lamp is made of cast bronze pieces, 12 lights with horsehair tassels, turned brass fittings and rayon sheathed electric cord. When I bring to life my luminaires, I enter this fictional world where each lamp is a creature and I find myself meeting their ánima (“spirit” in English). They all have a positively vain nature with a function that goes beyond the utilitarian. Their role is to shine and to be the center of attention. While the spaces that welcome them are static, my luminaires manifest movement with their fluid and irregular shapes and lines. They put on a show, where their role is to raise the spirits of a space or to disrupt and contrast with the straight, rigid lines of the room. My chandeliers are divas with a temperament of their own. Their true function is to be seen, to be dramatic, and to be protagonists. Inspired by nature, they are not figurative. Their organic silhouettes can be interpreted in unlimited ways. They could be spiders, have bones, legs, vertebrae, nails, hair, or eyes. They could also be skeletons, branches, cells, or viruses, it’s all up to the viewer’s imagination. In the exhibition, “Una modernidad hecha a mano”, I decided to try a new version of the Maratus lamp. Motivated by the exhibition’s scenario, I wanted to propose a piece that would lean more towards artistic than utilitarian, and perhaps visually uncomfortable for the spectators. I applied a dark patina to the bronze in order to eliminate the golden shine of the polished metal. I wanted to show, in an accelerated manner, how patina naturally metamorphoses when not polished. I also concealed the lightbulbs with horsehair tassels. I came across a new creature, a type of hairy arachnid, and I felt satisfied with the result. Maratus is the name of a spider that reveals a type of war bonnet in order to distract its prey or a predator. Similar to a peacock, it displays an explosion of colors and shapes that mimic two gigantic eyes. All our lamps can be wired according to each country. If sold to the USA it will be wired for the USA for instance. Please contact us. Isabel Moncada is a Mexican designer specialized in lighting.
