About the Item

Giuseppe Ostuni for O-Luce, chandelier, model '400', brass, enameled metal, Italy, 1948 This chandelier, model '400', is an early example made by the O-Luce lighting company, and designed by Giuseppe Ostuni in 1948. It beautifully encapsulates the expression of mid-century Italian modernism, where form and function strike a particularly delicate balance. Its design language is clean but rich in nuance; its geometry is restrained, yet far from minimal. The structure is composed of a circular brass ring, suspended elegantly from the ceiling by a constellation of rods that taper inward toward a single canopy mount. Each of the ten arms extends outward with a curved upward tilt, holding white conical shades with a a softened, bulbous form, and decorated with petite perforations through which the light escapes. The brass brings warmth while the shades lighten the visual weight. As an early work by Ostuni, the '400' already contains the seeds of what would become his design signature: a commitment to modularity, a poetic use of industrial materials, and a constant negotiation between technology and atmosphere. Giuseppe Ostuni (1907-1994) can be considered one of the most influential designers in modern lighting design. Born in Trieste, Italy in 1907, Giuseppe and his older brother Angelo Ostuni (1904-1981) grew up in turbulent times; in 1915 Italy declared war on the Habsburg Empire during the First World War. Only a few years later in 1922, Benito Mussolini became head of the Italian government and began to establish his fascist regime that would last till 1943. During the last year of the Second World War, Giuseppe Ostuni and his family lived with his brother Angelo in Milan. There, Giuseppe started to repair lampshades that had been damaged during the war. New lampshades were made with limited resources, all by hand, due to the lack of available materials. As an autodidact, he designed modern and convenient lighting through intense study and ‘learning by doing’. Soon after, Giuseppe set up his own workshop in 1947, and in 1948 he officially registered his company ‘O-LUCE’. Together with his brother Angelo, who made a great part of the lighting drawings, he worked on numerous designs and worked together with leading designers as Franco Buzzi, Tito Angoli, Joe Colombo, Marco Zanuso and more.

Angelo Lelii for Arredoluce Chandelier '12701' in Brass and Opaline Glass
By Angelo Lelii, Arredoluce
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Angelo Lelii, Arredoluce, chandelier model ‘12701’, brass, duplex opaline glass, nylon, Italy, design circa 1958 This eccentric chandelier model ‘12701’ is designed by the renowned and talented Italian designer Angelo Lelli for Arredoluce. The design features five diffusers executed in beautiful white opaline glass, radiating a soft and delicate light through the room. The frame in black lacquered polished brass creates this spatial arrangement of the pendants that are attached to it, which ensures that the light is evenly divided. Lelii decided to stay modest with the suspension of the light diffusing body by implementing four nylon cables. Paolo Angelo Lelii (1911-1979) was born in Ancona, Italy. After his studies at the Superior Institute of Industrial Art, Milan, he lived and worked in Monza. From 1943, Lelii started manufacturing lamps in his own house and in 1946 he advertised his well-known 'Tris...
