About the Item

Hungarian Art Deco Chandelier, Budapest, circa 1920 This chandelier originates from Budapest and dates to around 1920, a period when the Art Deco movement was flourishing across Central Europe. The suspension ring chandelier form originated in medieval times and was also used in the Berlin Deko style of the era. Carved from solid wood, the chandelier demonstrates a masterful blend of geometric rigor and handcrafted ornamentation, characteristic of Hungarian decorative arts of the era. Its central stem rises with a series of turned sections, culminating in a gently domed top that anchors the composition. The chandelier’s surface is finished in a blue-green lacquer highlighted with red accents along the edges, which emphasize its sculptural quality. Each arm ends in a tulip-shaped wooden candle cup painted a complementary golden hue, adding a folkloric, floral touch to the geometric structure. A larger inverted tulip forms the central pendant beneath, harmonizing with the smaller accents and providing a cohesive visual rhythm. This piece embodies the intersection of folk-inspired motifs and electric light in early 20^(th)-century Hungarian design. Published in Winter, Markus, Berlin Deko, Stuttgart, 2025, p. 71.
