Swedish Two-Arm Ceiling Light with Star Decoration, Sweden 1940s

About the Item

Ceiling lights have been used as decorative focal points for rooms since the early 20th century. In Scandinavian mid-century design, where interior lighting is of particular importance, designers managed to master the art of light without blinding or crushing space perception. This beautiful Swedish ceiling light is a unique work by all means. The style is of the early mid-century that was in many ways, a bridge between Art Déco and Modernism. The upper half of this model has a traditional canopy with a slip ring and a long, straight tube. The lower section however, is in a much more unique shape with numerous distinctive elements. The brass structure features two curved arms, each with a distinctive pierced brass shade with scalloped edges. Here is the small detail that is as subtle as it is playful: the perforated brass is punched through in a star-shape. The perforated pattern runs around the shades and when the light is lit, creates a subtle light that is evenly distributed through the small stars. The brass lower body gets beautifully suspended and due to the spatial arrangement of the shades, the radiation of the light gets evenly divided. The refined, organic construction has been achieved by the designers’ great eye for detail and high-level of craftsmanship this lamp is exemplary for. The design’s organic lines focus on the characteristics of brass itself and the artistic ability to easily connect line and material is especially visible in this unique model. Ceiling lamps, such as this 1940s piece have an important role to create an ambience that is cosy and stylish while not compromising on quality and functionality. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some scratches and marks on the brass. The lamp has beautiful patina.
