50ties - Tube Shade Floor Lamp

About the Item

This floor lamp was part of an interior designed by the Antwerp architect Jul de Roover. He was commissioned by Jeanne Brabants, the former founder of the Royal Antwerp Ballet. A large part of the furniture was designed by him and custom made (several pieces have been sold already to one of our overseas collectors). He mainly worked with furniture of the manufacturer Knoll International, which at that time was also produced by De Coene (Kortrijk). For his own designs, Charlotte Perriand was a great source of inspiration, which can be seen in his minimalist design and choice of materials (we still have a pine wall system in our collection). Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to ascertain the manufacturer of this lamp. The lamp's simplicity, with the details of the wooden sticks clamped crosswise through the holes of the tube at the top, is reminiscent of Isamu Noguchi. Beautifully finished with a loose octagonal piece of wood that can be placed in different ways to change the light reflection. The wooden tube also lets a little light through, creating a very nice warm glow. A very finely crafted dark grey lacquered metal tripod base supports the tube, creating a floating effect. The lamp is in its original condition and shows light signs of wear. Over the years a warm patina has developed on the wood, adding character to this nostalgic lamp.
