Mid century Danish floor lamp, model THV376 by TH. Valentiner for Povl Dinesen

About the Item

Vintage 1950s brushed brass and nickel plated fully adjustable Danish floor lamp, model THV 376 designed by TH. Valentiner for Povl Dinesen This is a rare and elusive floor lamp designed, and produced, by two rare and elusive people themselves! It’s a fact about 20th Century design that some designers, manufacturers and key distributors occasionally slip through the net of recognition. As such, when you try to research them, there appears to be no direct information about their life and work; other than some artefacts attributed to them in times gone by. And so it is with this light. It’s believed that TH. Valentiner was a Danish artist that also worked with a small number of manufacturers and distributors in creating lighting – actually in much the same way as another Danish unknown, Henning Norgaard, worked with Komfort to produce one of the most beautiful coffee tables I’ve ever seen. But nothing else is known about them. The THV376 floor lamp bears Valentiner’s initials (cast into the base as shown) and was distributed by Povl Dinesen; although we don’t know if Dinesen actually manufactured the product or just distributed it. Like Valentiner, Dinesen is a design ghost and only by searching some mid century forums have we found out that whilst he apparently did also design furniture himself, he was mostly known for retailing Danish lighting and furniture and distributing it to the USA – as it was with this light and a smaller table lamp version (THV375) also designed by Valentiner. The structure itself is crafted from solid brass which was often brushed or bright polished; or nickel plated to order. Occasionally it can found in a mixture of finishes, as here, where the base and the top stem are brushed brass with the main stem, struts and adjustable fastening joint being nickel plated. It is completed with a simple light coloured fabric shade and electrical cord with inline on/off switch and 3 pin plug. Not only is it a beautifully elegant and simple light but it also benefits from a very clever rotating central clamp that is used in conjunction with an adjustable head and extending cross support. All these elements combined together means that the lamp is almost infinitely variable, and can also be adjusted in height. This makes it a very flexible decorative or task light that can be used as an uplighter, angled down lighter, or set to focus on a wall or a painting as more of a spotlight; as shown in the accompanying photos. It remains in very good vintage condition with some small marks and scratches on the base and metal supports just as you would expect, and with some slight discoloration and smudges to the shade. None of this detracts for the beauty and function of the lamp itself. It is supplied with an LED bulb and has been fully electrically tested - but in any event we would recommend you test the lamp independently before use in case any damages have occurred during transportation. Dimensions Because this light can be adjusted in numerous ways it means the actual overall height and width can vary significantly based on how it is set up. As an example, the size of the lamp as shown in the main picture is approximately 150cm high and the shade protrudes around 30cm past the base. The base itself has a diameter of 32cm and the shade is 25cm in diameter with a height of 25cm. • 4 Danish Mid Century Arne Hovmand-Olsen, Mogens Kold MK310 teak dining chairs
By Mogens Kold Møbelfabrik, Arne Hovmand-Olsen
    Located in Highclere, Newbury
A beautifully sculptural set of 4 Vintage Danish Mid Century Arne Hovmand-Olsen MK310 teak dining chairs with original black vinyl upholstery for Mogens Kold, 1950s. Originally designed by Olsen in 1951 and manufactured by Mogens Kold, Denmark, these chairs stand out as one of the very first chair designs Olsen created. The chairs feature a sculptural organic back shape that is constructed with a feature insert of plywood and solid teak. Olsen was recognised as being one of the forerunners of using this technique to add strength and durability to his designs as well as creating beautifully sculptured forms that appear as carved from solid wood. This is a design and construction style also adopted by many of his contemporaries including Niels Otto Moller, and many of the designs created by them both are often misattributed as each other’s as they share many similar details and characteristics. These particular chairs were produced with two options of seating style and fabric: one was the famous Danish paper cord seat that was widely used in the 50’s and 60s, and the other, as here, in simple black vinyl. The vinyl used on Mid Century Danish seating is very durable and impressed with a realistic grain that actually makes it very difficult to tell it apart from leather. The other advantage of the vinyl is that as it is intentionally used without a foam insert it accentuates the clean, crisp angular line of the seating base which acts as a counterpoint to the softer more flowing lines of the wooden structure. Plus it’s a lot easier to keep clean and in good condition compared to paper cord! The set is in very good vintage condition with light marks in the wooden frame and on the seats here and there commensurate with age and use – all the joints are solid and sound. Three of the four chairs maintain both the Danish quality control and the MK manufacturer’s metal labels as shown in the pictures, the other is missing in action, maybe eaten by a tiny cockapoo... The chairs are very much in ‘found’ condition and have just had a simple rub down and application of wax to bring them up to a soft sheen. Note that it is a hard seat as there is no foam underlay, but they look good with such sharp lines and are, in any event, very easy chairs to upholster...

  • Hans J. Wegner Danish 1940s Leather and Oak Model A721 Executive Chair
    By Hans J. Wegner
    Located in Highclere, Newbury
An exceedingly rare Hans J. Wegner Model A721 cognac leather and oak early Danish Mid-century executive chair for Planmøbel, Denmark 1940. Originally designed by Wegner following his work for Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller’s ground breaking Rådhus (Aarhus City Hall) project in 1940, the A721, stands out as one of his earliest known chair designs. Along with a number of other chairs like the B123, the Rådhus chairs were handcrafted by Michael Laursen, I.C.A Nielsen and Planmøbel specifically for the project. Originally made in small numbers all the chairs were of uniform construction with solid oak frames matched to leather upholstery and with thick, solid jointing work that complemented the angular forms. Here we also see for the first time, Wegner’s use of the flared arm rest that were a signature design element for every armchair produced for the Rådhus. These flares were either carved into the wood (as in the Council chamber chairs...
