About the Item

This Italian floor lamp is very compelling, it is stylish, whimsy, but it is also material and craft bound. Like their international counterparts, mid-century Italian designers prized the marriage of form and function, and the result was an immediately recognizable look. In Italy, the evolution of lighting design developed side by side with the post-war recovery. Designer lamps became more accessible, and the aesthetic and materials more experimental. This floor lamp’s design shows this interesting and unique era’s marks in its clever solutions and use of materials. The body is composed of three, twisted metal tubes resting on, and ending in rings. Despite the material, the composition looks effortlessly smooth and organic. The top ring holds the half sphere, unattached lampshade that can be therefore freely moved around to create the ideal look and to direct the light. The lacquered white shade stands out against the black body, functioning as the focal point of the design. The hanging textile cable is twisted, a subtle but successful detail to add more visual interest. Overall, the distinctive design of this floor lamp represents Italian mid-century modernism in its purest form, both in terms of aesthetics and functionality. The marriage of straight and round lines and versatile materials and shapes in perfect harmony truly shows the designer’s skill. This one-of-a-kind floor lamp is a delightfully distinctive model, with immediately recognizable details. Design in the mid-century years was fuelled by the development of materials and technology with stunning results as seen in this floor lamp design. Scandinavian furniture was made with mostly light-coloured materials and some furniture shapes included elements of asymmetry, or having two sides that were not completely even and balanced. This can be seen here as well, as the lamp’s black lacquered metal structure isn’t perfectly symmetrical, instead, the “cage” surrounding the lampshade spirals downwards. The fluted lampshade has a cylindrical shape and is made of a light coloured fabric. It is stretched over metal wires that create the lines. Thanks to its large, almost see-through quality, the warm light is diffused evenly when the lamp is switched on. Furthermore, the fabric shade pairs well with the colder metal structure.
