About the Item

Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a Swedish interior decorator and furniture designer born in 1919 in Gotland, Sweden. After working as a carpenter apprentice, he studied architecture, followed by his career in industrial design for General Motors. The company he founded, after assisting other designers such as Carl Malmsten and Werner West, brought us beautiful pieces that are still appreciated to this day for their timeless character and quality. Jakobsson, is best known for his imaginative lighting fixtures, such as this rare, and indisputably unique floor lamp. The focal point of this piece is its distinctive top part made out of ribbed metal with seven relief lamellas, allowing soft ribbons of light to be dispersed for a warm, soft glow. This top part is commonly known as the model “T487/M”. Jakobsson’s expert craftsmanship is noticeable in the design of the lamp’s shade, but the body of the lamp further confirms his architectural experience and attention to detail. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, this floor lamp is durable, due to the use of brass. Brass was the preferred material of mid-20th century lighting manufacturers, because of its malleability, strength, and beautiful golden sheen. At the top of the lamp, there is a signature brass ring that can be found on multiple of Jakobsson’s designs, like the “B99” table lamp. The cast iron base that keeps the lamp firmly in place while creating a perfectly balanced look is marked “Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB” on its bottom. Besides its alluring appearance, this piece has captivated collectors for decades - the origins of this lamp largely remain a mystery to avid design enthusiasts. It combines two iconic Hans-Agne Jakobsson elements, the intricate shade seen in the design of his hanging lamps and the sleek stem and base seen in other floor lamps, creating what is now an extraordinary and rare piece of lighting. This design truly elevated what could have been a simple, strictly functional piece of lighting into a focal point which combines the mid-century pursuits of functionality and aesthetics. Perfect for any interior, this lamp has the power to give a space a breath of modernity, perfect for collectors and appreciators of interior design. Thanks to its charm and unique backstory, this rare floor lamp surpasses the basic function of a lighting element and brings together design history and skill into an unforgettable piece.
