Sculptural Swedish Modern Three Arm Floor Lamp in Elm and Silk, 1930s

About the Item

This very rare three arm floor lamp was designed and produced in Sweden in the 1930s. The lamp has been attributed as an early Harald Notini design for Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik. With its sculptural arms and organic shape, the lamp is a great example of the originality and craftsmanship of the early Swedish Modern period. The design is marked by the three undulating arms, each placed at a different height. Each arm with a brass fixture and individual push switch to turn the light on. The three arms meet in the centre of the piece, connecting to a sphere shaped element. The central base consists of the three individual stems combined, again connected by a wooden sphere at the bottom. The circular foot is in elm wood and slightly raised from the floor. Each stem and arm is made of tubular brass which is completely wrapped in strands of veneered wood. In this period the metal would often be covered by leather straps; to execute this intricate technique in wood instead required an even higher level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. The three tapered shades have been renewed in an ivory pure silk fabric with a beautiful texture. The lamp is in a good, restored condition. Renewed shades. The base with a few drying cracks which have been restored and are not disturbing. Wiring has been checked, currently wired for European 220V use,
