Brass and Smoke Glass Wall Light by Holger Johansson, Sweden 20th Century

About the Item

Swedish master of lighting design, Holger Johansson, brought much glamour into Swedish mid-century modernism. Without giving up the “form follows function” ideal of the era he created spectacular models, like this wall lamp. The mid-20th century was defined by leading Swedish designers’ sleek and innovative modernist designs that became the trademark style in Scandinavian lighting. The simple style of this sconce is clean with a straightforwardly modern look. The lamp features a brass frame holding two smoked glass shades. The shades resemble pressed spheres and hang from brass poles, with the light coming from the glass shades brightening the yellow brass beautifully. This piece has all the characteristics Johansson was famous for: it is elegant and stylish where the design allows it to be shiny, yet it is never tacky. Since the two materials - brass and smoked glass - dictate the look, much attention was paid to their quality and to the craftsmanship that united them into the spherical shape. The design has great proportions, and when lit, the lamp creates an exceptionally atmospheric light, giving the brass a vivid colour as well. Sconces are a timeless type of lighting fixture that can easily elevate their surroundings. These fixtures never go out of style, and have been in use for centuries for good reason. This piece was manufactured by the Swedish company Westal in Bankeryd, Sweden. The historical company was founded in 1947, and for more than seven decades, it has developed functional and aesthetically pleasing luminaires. ‎Condition: In good vintage condition. Brass and Opal Wall Light by Atelier Jean Perzel, France Early 20th century
By Atelier Jean Perzel
Located in Utrecht, NL
From 1920 to 1939, Art Deco revolutionized 20th century architecture and design. The period also gave birth to the Jean Perzel company, which would also make its mark on the world of lighting and design. Jean Perzel’s light fixtures and furniture in both glass and bronze later adorned the world’s most prestigious addresses… from the King’s Court in Belgium to the home of Henry Ford as well as the Rothschild’s family residence. He also conceived the lighting for the League of Nations in Geneva, the Luxembourg Cathedral, the Embassy of Canada at Lahaye, and even the French cruise ship Normandie. Like all wall lights from the Atelier, this wall light was designed and handcrafted in their workshop located in the heart of Paris. Since each model highlighted the architecture of the place that inspired its creation, the pure lines of Jean Perzel’s fixtures...
