Ceramic Wall Light by Walburga Külz, circa 1975
About the Item
This ceramic wall light, created circa 1975 by German artist Walburga Kulz (b. 1931), exemplifies her ability to blend sculptural artistry with functional design. Featuring bold geometric shapes in earthy brown and white tones, the piece offers a dynamic contrast enhanced by a central vertical stripe. Curved surfaces and a textured glaze add tactile depth, making the light both a functional object and a sculptural centerpiece. Kulz, trained as a ceramicist in post-war Germany, gained recognition for her modernist aesthetic and meticulous glazing techniques, bridging fine art and utility. This 1970s work reflects her innovative spirit, reimagining ceramics in non-traditional applications. Rare and collectible, it is a timeless testament to Kulz’s mastery and her lasting influence on ceramic design.

Walburga Külz
Walburga Külz (* September 22, 1921 in Mittelberg; † October 15, 2002 in Erbach) was a German ceramist. Walburga Külz learned her trade from 1940 to 1944 in the ceramics workshop of Otto Lindig in Dornburg/Saale, for a time she also worked as a volunteer in the porcelain manufactory Fürstenberg. She then studied painting on ceramics with Siegfried Möller at the Nordic Academy of Art in Bremen. After her master's examination, which she passed in Weimar in 1946, she again worked briefly for Otto Lindig. In 1947 she took over the management of the Margaretenhöhe ceramics workshop in Essen. In 1953 she set up her own workshop in Erbach in the Rheingau, where she worked until 1988. From 1968 onwards, she produced mainly non-purpose ceramics and small sculptures. In 1973 she was awarded the Hessian State Prize for German Arts and Crafts. On the occasion of her 80th birthday, an exhibition of her work was held at the Museum of Applied Arts in Gera and then at the Marburg University Museum of Art and Cultural History. Literature
