Contemporary Horizontal Brass and Alabaster 003 Sconce by Orphan Work, 2017

Buyer Protection Guaranteed

Orphan work is founded on the concept of adopting work from anonymous artists. Because of its anonymous nature, orphan work calls for attention to remain fixed on an exploration of materials and the pieces themselves rather than the technicalities of where, why, and by whom they were conceived.

About the Maker

The collection is made by generations of master artisans locally in New York and Florence, Italy. Dark horse disciples of art and design, Material Lust (Christian Swafford and Lauren Larson) abide by a Solitarian philosophy, wholly independent of trend. Though their work draws on myriad influences—the guidance of their artist mothers; the old-world methods of the master artisans with whom they partner —their intent remains sharply focused. Through preservation of time-honored technique and an uncompromising commitment to forward-thinking design, Swafford and Larson honor the dignity in the ominous and the oft-forgotten; pushing the bounds of what deserves to be seen. In spring 2016, Material Lust opened the Annex, a collaborative space that is an evolving extension of the brand’s vision to bring radical design to the forefront—and one that redefines the concept of a Total Work of Art. In November 2016 they debuted their body of work at JF Chen in Los Angeles as a curatorial collaboration with Bianca Chen, using JF Chen's renowned collection, showcased among the legendary collection and their admired selections of artists. In addition to furniture and textile design, the pair bring over ten years of experience to Creative Consulting, Art Direction, Product Design and Interiors, working regularly with clients seeking bold and and unorthodox methods of developing their brands, products, or spaces.
