About the Item
WALBURGA KÜLZ, UNIQUE WALL LAMP, 1970S
Walburga Külz (September 22, 1921 in Mittelberg – October 15, 2002 in Erbach) was a German ceramist.
Walburga Külz learned her trade from 1940 to 1944 in Otto Lindig’s ceramics workshop in Dornburg/Saale. She then studied painting on ceramics with Siegfried Möller at the Nordic Art Academy in Bremen. After her master’s examination, which she passed in Weimar in 1946, she again worked briefly for Otto Lindig. In 1947 she took over management of the Margaretenhöhe ceramics workshop in Essen. In 1953 she set up her own workshop in Erbach in the Rheingau, where she worked until 1988. From 1968 onwards, she mainly made non-purpose ceramics and small sculptures. In 1973 she was awarded the Hessian State Prize for German Arts and Crafts. On the occasion of her 80th birthday, an exhibition about her work took place in the Museum for Applied Arts in Gera and then in the Marburg University Museum for Art and Cultural History.
This is an exceptional example of her work in an elegant shape and in brown tones color.
