About the Item

Important Pair of Wrought Iron Wall Sconces by Degué – Art Deco, France, circa 1930 Discover this remarkable pair of wall sconces signed by Degué, emblematic of the French Art Deco style of the 1930s. Mounted on a wrought iron structure evoking the fluidity of a sheaf, these sconces are delicately adorned with finely chiselled ginkgo leaves. At the center, a pressed molded glass element depicting a basket of flowers exquisitely enhances the ensemble with refinement. The base, nestled within the forged structure, recalls basket weaving, topped with stylized roses inspired by the spirit of Mackintosh. The convex curvature of the glass diffuses light both forward and to the sides, providing a soft and enveloping wall illumination. Combining the timeless elegance of classical art with the industrial modernity of Art Deco, this pair of sconces is a masterpiece of aesthetics and craftsmanship. Condition: Very good, carefully restored. The wrought iron frames have been stripped, treated, and patinated to reveal their original splendor. The wiring has been completely redone. Dimensions: Height: 40 cm Width: 40 cm Depth: 16 cm An exceptional piece to enhance a refined interior. History: David Guéron and the Degué Art Glassworks A Glass Entrepreneur at the Heart of Art Deco: David Guéron (1892–1950), a glass artist of Turkish origin and Spanish nationality, is a unique figure in the Art Deco movement in France. He is best known as the founder of the Verrerie d’Art Degué, active in Paris from 1926 to 1939. From Beginnings in Compiègne to Parisian Growth: In the 1920s, David Guéron founded the crystal works in Compiègne before turning to luxury artistic glassmaking. In 1926, he established his factory on Boulevard Malesherbes in Paris under the name Verrerie d’Art Degué. There he primarily designed vases, bowls, wall sconces, and chandeliers in the Art Deco style, characterized by geometric forms, clean lines, and a rich color palette. An Aesthetic Inspired... Sometimes Too Much: Degué’s creations were heavily influenced by Lorraine glass masters such as Daum, the Muller brothers, and especially Charles Schneider. This stylistic proximity led to accusations of plagiarism and even legal disputes against Guéron. Despite this, Degué’s glassworks enjoyed some commercial success, meeting the growing demand for modern decorative objects during the interwar period. Crisis and Closure of the Company In August 1936, David Guéron was imprisoned in Compiègne for attempting to sell assets belonging to a bankrupt company—likely related to his previous crystal business. This legal issue hastened the decline of the factory. In 1939, as World War II began, the glassworks ceased operations permanently. Guéron left France for the United States, ending his career in glassmaking. A Recognized Art Deco Legacy: Today, objects signed Degué are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Their heritage value lies not only in their artistic quality but also in their place within a highly creative and competitive era among French glassmakers.
