About the Item

Pair of straw marquetry sconces, designed and entirely made by a talented French artist, using ancient technics of straw marquetry and innovating methods. Totally non flammable of course. Structure made in aluminum. The centre part is in a stainless steel plaque beautifully engraved in checked pattern style. Gorgeous color and a fine stripe line in creating a great contrast. Two pieces (one pair). Priced by 2. Important: there is no wire electric connection included so it fits adapts very easily any wall. Its an applique you cover the bulb so it can be placed in both ways facing up or facing down. Straw and marquetry, matter and technique: As early as the 17th century straw marquetry is used in furniture, bimbeloterie, the twentieth is added interior decoration. A marquetry is a veneer on a support with a collage edge to edge The straw is split to the nail, then crushed with a wooden pliers and glued. The straw has a silica varnish of its own, which makes it all the interest, both in terms of light in terms of resistance and impermeability. The material is today mainly rye straw, which the grain grower cultivates for chairs and stubble roofs. These are old seeds that grow up to 2.3 m tall. It can be plated on different media depending on the achievements. The crops are grown in France, the rye is mown mechanically, the stalks dry on the field and then each strand is cut by hand between the two nodes of the top. It is most often the cereal who makes the colors, by immersion in baths, with dye, and salt to fix (the straw is cooked at least 1:30 depending on the result you want to get). The grain can dye up to 50 kg at a time and is equipped with dryers to allow the straw to dry in the best conditions. The colors are infinite apart from the white that can not be made since the natural straw is yellow. If the technique is mastered, the material remains "alive" so the same recipe does not give the same results depending on the harvest. The straw is glued with glue according to the support on which it must hold. In general wood glue (solvent-free, non-flammable) There is no size limit to a straw marquetry creation. A marquetry is a veneer with an edge-to-edge bonding which induces "joints" of the "joints". The material is soft, smooth, sensual and extremely bright. It is also impervious, rot-proof, solid and inert with time. It is thanks to the natural varnish of silica which composes it. The colors are random but infinite. The color of a stem is often very nuanced on either side of its length. White does not exist, the natural color being slightly yellow. There is a general no waxing or other primer, the material to such brilliance that it is rarely worthwhile to extinguish it. However it is possible to skate the straw with metallized polishes, and I sometimes use on the tables, a wax made from carnauba (natural wax with strong hardening power) which ensures a better resistance: notably improves the hardness of the support and the 'impermeability. The material once plated is not flammable (fire tests were carried out on the occasion of a straw marquetry in a large hotel).
