About the Item
A rubber sconce drawing on Bauhaus rigor and machine-age precision, reframing industrial lighting through a sensual, synthetic lens.
With RUBBERWORKS, Rich Aybar redefines materiality, embracing rubber’s
contradictions—pliable yet strong, industrial yet bodily, synthetic yet strangely
alive. This collection invites viewers to reconsider the objects that populate
their domestic landscapes, turning the familiar into the fantastical.
Sconce 01 was part of the performance Exhibition "The Theater of Things" the show transformed the gallery into a domestic stage — an ever-evolving space shaped by the creative voices of seven designers. Each night, one of them slept in the space. Each morning, a journalist, curator, or critic joined for coffee and conversation — exploring what it means to live among collectible pieces.
Inspired by radical gestures like Gianni Pettena’s La Casa all’Elba and Joseph Beuys’ Coyote performance, the exhibition is both lived experience and open dialogue.
