The Société d'Exploitation des Verreries de Bagneaux (SEVB) played a pivotal role in the history of the French glass industry. Founded in 1921 through the merger of Saint-Gobain and the Verreries Appert Frères of Clichy, the company quickly solidified its influence in a rapidly evolving sector. Located in Bagneaux-sur-Loing, south of Paris, this region had been a leading glassmaking center since the 18th century. Thanks to abundant natural resources such as pure silica sand and wood for powering the furnaces, the glass industry thrived, making Bagneaux one of Europe’s most prominent glass centers throughout the 19th century. SEVB stood out not only for its industrial role but also for its technical innovations. One of the most significant achievements was the creation of Pyrex glass in 1922. Developed by glassmakers Clovis and Léon Régent, this borosilicate glass, resistant to thermal shock, revolutionized industries, particularly in the culinary and scientific fields. Durable and practical, Pyrex glass was used to create everything from kitchenware to laboratory equipment, leading to the formation of the Société Le Pyrex. The company also expanded its activities by developing pressed-molded glass, which it marketed directly to the public. To facilitate this, SEVB opened offices in Paris at 7 Rue de Surène, where it exhibited its creations and sold its products. It also partnered with ironworks, who assembled the glass into metal frameworks for items like chandeliers, wall sconces, and lamps—merging art and industry into unique designs. Throughout its existence, SEVB contributed to shaping the glass industry both in France and internationally, creating innovative products and influencing the aesthetic of glass objects while meeting the practical needs of everyday life. The legacy of the company endures in the world of glass and design, where its creations remain a model of innovation and elegance.
