Swedish Grace Brass and Opaque Glass Wall Lamp, Sweden 1930s

About the Item

Swedish Grace was an exquisite early twentieth-century design movement, that remains largely unknown today. Prior to the more famous, minimalist Swedish designs that were to develop in the post-war period, Swedish Grace developed in parallel with the more famous Art Deco movement. It is an important chapter of modern design history and can be considered the Nordic branch of the Art Deco style. Swedish Grace was a shift towards geometric stylization, streamlining, and a paring down to the essentials of line and form. This movement seamlessly blended the decorative expressiveness of Art Deco and Neoclassicism with the characteristic Scandinavian restraint (or minimalism, as it would be coined in the early 20th century). This lamp has a traditional yet playful and eclectic feel to it, making it exemplary of this period and a lovely addition to any interior. The opaque glass shade is accompanied by a brass base and “hat” that are connected by six parts that pierce through the top, which adds an interesting element to the design. Caged by these brass additions, the light coming from the glass shade makes them shine brightly. The rest of the design is not short of subtle decorative elements either, which is apparent with the ‘antenna’ on top and the openwork finial on the bottom of the base. Whether the lamp is on or off, the opaque glass shades provide great contrast to the patinated brass structure. This lamp is a timeless example of how simplicity, combined with thoughtful craftsmanship, can become a work of art in its own right. Condition: In good vintage condition.
