Wall Lamps Coming from Drouant Restaurant Paris, 1960

About the Item

ONE WALL LAMP, or sconce, from a set of six (This listing is for one lamp). Structure in metal, supporting two Demi-lune pieces of 5/8" thick glass. Light is coming from the bottom part throughout a candelabra LED lightbulb. Provenance: Restaurant DROUANT, Paris, France. Circa 1960 Drouant Restaurant is one of the most famous restaurants in Paris. Located at 16-18, Place Gaillon in Paris. Begun in 1880 as a small bistro, the Restaurant Drouant was soon frequented by literary and artistic figures including Daudet, Rodin, Pissarro, and Renoir, who would dine together there on Friday nights, paving the way for the restaurant's reputation as a locus of intellectual and artistic life in Paris. Since 1914, the French literary organization l'Académie Goncourt has met in the salon Drouant, and continues to announce its famous annual prize, "Le Prix de Goncourt'' from the Ruhlmann designed wrought iron staircase installed there. For the Drouant project, Ruhlmann worked with architect Boileau, with whom he also worked at the Théâtre de la Michodière nearby. As an ensemblier, Ruhlmann's designs for the Drouant included the furniture, walls, staircase, ceiling (with fresco by Jean Cocteau), and wall sconces, thus he created a harmonious interior with complementary colors, forms and textures. The Drouant was a significant commission for Ruhlmann and yielded one of his most well-known designs, the dining chair, known as the "Drouant" chair which he designed in 1924 and later exhibited in his "hotel du Collectionneur" pavilion at the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925. H.88"1/2 x W.8" x D.4" This listing is for ONE lamp, six are currently available.

Very Modern Brass & Lucite Chandelier & Sconces from George V Hotel Paris 1960's
Located in Encino, CA
For project developers, Architects and Interior Designers. For Hotels, Restaurants or big mansions and Lodges, etc... Chandelier & Sconces from George V Hotel Paris 1960's. One-of-a-kind - A unique opportunity to own a piece of French luxury and history... Spectacular and large chandelier with 6 matching sconces from the George V Hotel in Paris. Circa 1960s. In the style of Gaetano Sciolari or Gino Sarfatti. We contacted the George V hotel in Paris, now owned by the Four Seasons group, and learned that they did not keep the archives from that period. Therefore, they have been unable to confirm the artist or the manufacturer of this chandelier and sconces. This chandelier and sconces represent a moment in history from a Parisian hotel where famous people and celebrities from around the world stayed for decades. The structure is metal. Four iron frames must be assembled to form a unique frame of approximately 240 x 240 cm (95" x 95"). On this structure, 8 pieces of aluminum covered in brass are screwed on like a puzzle, separated by heavy bronze frames. From this structure hang around one thousand (1000) lucite (acrylic) tubes (rods) arranged in a diamond pattern. The tallest tube measures 120 cm (4 ft) high. Unfortunately, we do not have images of the chandelier when it was mounted on the ceiling at the George V hotel, as at that time, photography was not allowed inside the hotel. The sconces measure approximately 68 cm wide (27") by 21 cm deep (8") by 120 cm (4ft) high, with the 54 tubes (rods) installed. The wiring needs to be fully redone with an LED system. The original wiring used neon lights...
