About the Item

An authentic Art Deco uplight table lamp from the 1920s by French artist and ceramist Henri Chaumeil (1877-1944). Trained by his father Aristide, Henri first exhibited his work in 1914 at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants. After working during the first world war in a factory of fire-ceramics, he came back to Paris where he studied at the well respected l'Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. After taking part in both the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, his fame kept growing. With the help of his son Paul (1902-1984) he created a style of ornamental and utilitarian china of irreproachable quality and design. This antique, ceramic vasque lamp features Henri Chaumeils' initials on the base (see photo). It dates from the 1920s and is a wonderful exemple of French Art Deco design. The lamp has a shiny green/turquoise glaze with details in iridescent/metal black. A few different variations of this lamp were made: same color scheme but with a different motif as well as a floor lamp version on a pedestal. This uplight table lamp is meant to reflect light upwards to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The inside of the lamp has a white glaze. This iconic Art Deco vasque lamp is in fair antique condition. It shows minor signs of wear consistent with age (approximately 100 years) and use. It has two chips: one on the black base (see close up) and another on the turquoise rim - both on the same side (see photo). The lamp still has its original electrical wiring (EU standard) that needs to be replaced. The construction is simple and the wiring can easily be replaced by another up-to-date standard if so desired. Dimension: height 27.5 cm/ 10 3/4", diameter with handles 25 cm/ 9 3/4", diameter top 24 cm/ 9 1/2", diameter base 11.5 cm/ 4 1/2". Weight: 2.7 kg/ 5.95 lbs.
