Antique 3 Chinese Bamboo Insect Cricket Cages "Curved Form" and 2 Metal Crickets

About the Item

This is a noticeable and expensive hobby in the Chinese culture for keeping crickets as pets in a small cage. It began in China as early as the Tang Dynasty, (618-907). By their chirping "songs", crickets were caught at the end of summer and kept in ornate cages throughout the winter, often placed on the bedside. The slender form of this late 19th-century cricket cage indicates it was designed to be portable, carried around in a pocket, or strung on a waistband. These are 3 Bamboo Insect Cricket Cages, large, medium, and small. The bamboo sticks are vertically inserted into the 3 decks forming 2 floors, and a roof on the top. There are two gates to control the entrance at the opposite sides. Note: the gates have 7 holes in the large and medium, and 5 holes in the small one, and you will see the middle holes are not aligned with the rest holes. They are a little further away. That is to prevent the cricket easily opening the gate accidentally and escaping from the cage. To open the gate, you must push the middle stick to align the middle hole and then slide all the sticks up so the gate can be opened. In addition to the Gourd Cage, there is a live-modelled Cricket made of metal and mixed materials. It can be placed into the cage. Crickets possibly were made around the 1960s. Size: the large one is measured 4.25" W x 1.25" D x 4.5" H
