Antique Chinese Cricket Cage "House Form" and a Metal Cricket

About the Item

This is a noticeable and expensive hobby in the Chinese culture for keeping crickets as pets in a small cage. It began in China as early as the Tang Dynasty, (618-907). By their chirping "songs", crickets were caught at the end of summer and kept in ornate cages throughout the winter, often placed on the bedside. The slender form of this late 19th-century cricket cage indicates it was designed to be portable, carried around in a pocket, or strung on a waistband. This is a Bamboo bar enclosure and hardwood made for the roof and floor and an operable door to open and allow the cricket to place in. The door is a carved bone panel and painted a boy portrait standing on the door. In addition to the Gourd Cage, there is a live-modelled Cricket made of metal. It can be placed into the cage. The metal cricket possibly was made around the 1960s.
