Exceptional Hinks Emley & Sons Duplex Oil Lamp – Newcastle-upon-Tyne, c.1885
An outstanding late 19th-century oil lamp by Hinks Emley & Sons of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, incorporating the firm’s celebrated Duplex burner. This example is notable not only for its technical quality but also for its architectural form, reflecting the height of Victorian neoclassical taste.
The lamp is supported by a beautifully cast Corinthian column in patinated brass, the fluted shaft rising to an ornate capital enriched with acanthus leaves and scrolling volutes. The attention to detail in the capital exemplifies the neoclassical revival style, drawing directly on the vocabulary of ancient Roman and Greek design. The column itself stands upon a stepped architectural plinth, square in form and finished with a crisply modelled medallion, giving the lamp both grandeur and stability reminiscent of monumental classical architecture.
Above, a finely cut clear glass font houses the original Hinks Duplex mechanism, engineered to provide a powerful and steady light. The lamp retains its exquisite opal vaseline glass shade, mould-blown with subtle ribbing, rising to a crimped and ruffled rim. The shade graduates from a soft opalescent white to a uranium-infused green edge, producing a gentle radiance by day and a striking fluorescence under UV light. The shade is completed with its original clear glass chimney.
A piece of technical innovation and a decorative object of sculptural presence, uniting Victorian engineering with neoclassical elegance.

Cleaning, Polishing & Restoration

Rewiring includes a standard rewire to conform with UK electrical regulations to an adaptation or conversion
