Antique Swedish Brass Oil Lampe by Böhlmarks of Stockholm
About the Item
An antique brass oil electric lamp by Swedish Böhlmarks of Stockholm.
A very elegant and classic design lamp by one of Swedens top lamp producers from that period.
The lamp has been rewired in twisted gold cloth flex and insulated where the flex passes through the brass lamp.
The brass has been lightly polished.
Still retaining its original brass and porcelain bulb holder with on/off switch.
Also with its original brass lampshade holder.
New black baize applied to the base.
Converted from oil to electricity sometime just after the turn of the century when electricity was introduced into the home.
Can be fitted with an EU UK or US plug.
Böhlmarks was founded by Arvid Böhlmark in Stockholm in 1872. Originally, Böhlmark sold imported kerosene lamps (hand, table, wall and hanging lamps as well as stable lanterns) and gas oil lamps made of tin, zinc and brass, with accessories such as burners, oil housings, glass and zinc feet, wicks, lamp glasses, cups, screens. So-called minute sales took place at Storkyrkobrinken 8 in Gamla stan in Stockholm.
In 1874, the company had outgrown its first premises and moved offices and warehouses to Österlånggatan 28. The sales booth moved to Stora Nygatan 36. Here, sewing machines from the American company The Elias Howe Machine Company were also sold, for which Böhlmarks had the agency in Sweden and Norway.[2] In 1880 another sales booth opened at Regeringsgatan 45.
Böhlmarks began its own production of kerosene stoves, including the Excelsior type, in 1885. More sales booths opened at Hötorget 8 and Götgatan 3. By 1892, sales had expanded to include six addresses in Stockholm including Norrmalmstorg 10 and Norrtullsgatan 8.
