Brutalist Studio Pottery Lamp by Bernard Rooke, British, Mid-20th Century

About the Item

A sculptural mid-20th century table lamp by renowned British ceramicist Bernard Rooke, handcrafted in England during the 1960s. Exemplifying Brutalist ceramic lighting with an organic twist, this taller, oval-bodied form reflects Rooke’s refined departure from the weightier motifs typical of his early work. The lamp’s central motif — a deeply modelled red leaf applied to both faces — is flanked by vertical, flame-like elements suggestive of tall grasses. The surface is highly textured and expressive, finished in a palette of earthy ochre, iron red, and a soft lavender-grey wash that drapes across the shoulders. This interplay of form and glaze places the piece firmly within the lineage of post-war British studio pottery. There is a minor, stable kiln flaw (likely a firing chip) to the front leaf, modest and structurally sound. Otherwise, the lamp remains in very good vintage condition, with its original finish and form intact. The base is stamped with Rooke’s ‘BR’ mark. Dimensions: Height: 41.5 cm Width: 17 cm Depth: 13 cm A considered addition for collectors of mid-century modern design, British art pottery, or Brutalist home décor — and an evocative example of 1960s handmade lighting that balances sculptural presence with naturalistic form
