ABOUT LAMP
A striking Brutalist table lamp crafted in wrought iron, evocative of the sculptural aesthetic of Paul Evans. The bold, textural design features a geometric and abstract forged form, characteristic of Evans’ distinctive approach to metalwork. This lamp takes a single tubular bulb and has been newly rewired for contemporary use. In good vintage condition, the surface displays an appealing, age-appropriate patina and minor wear consistent with its age, enhancing its raw and industrial charm. A sculptural lighting piece that blurs the line between functional design and expressive art.
ABOUT ARTIST
Paul Evans (American, 1931–1987) was an influential American designer, sculptor, and furniture maker, widely celebrated for his innovative contributions to the mid-20th-century American Studio Craft movement. Best known for his bold, sculptural metal furniture, Evans blurred the boundaries between fine art and functional design, leaving a lasting legacy in modern and brutalist interiors.Born in Newtown, Pennsylvania, Evans developed an early interest in the arts. He studied at several institutions, including the School for American Craftsmen in Rochester, New York; Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan; and the prestigious School of Art and Design in Lausanne, Switzerland. His formal training combined traditional craft with modernist design principles, fostering his unique style. gan working in collaboration with Philip Lloyd Powell, a fellow designer and craftsman. Together, they opened a studio in New Hope, Pennsylvania—a town that became a hub for modern American design. During this period, Evans began developing his signature aesthetic, which combined welded and sculpted metals, richly textured surfaces, and geometric abstraction. By the 1960s and 1970s, Evans had become known for several iconic furniture lines, including:
Argente Series – characterized by aluminum relief surfaces and futuristic, silver-toned finishes.
Sculpted Bronze Series – featuring bold, brutalist forms with molten textures and patinated finishes.
Cityscape Series – composed of sleek, reflective metal panels in a patchwork-like composition, appealing to the glamor of the disco-era modernism.
He was a longtime designer for Directional Furniture, which helped bring his custom aesthetic to a broader market while maintaining a high level of craftsmanship and experimentation. Paul Evans’s work stood out for its hands-on, artisanal process combined with a deeply modernist vision. Each piece he created was unique or produced in limited editions, often signed and dated. His furniture is highly collectible today and featured in major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Arts and Design, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Evans died in 1987, shortly after retiring to North Carolina, but his innovative approach to furniture design—merging art, sculpture, and utility—continues to influence contemporary artists and designers. His pieces remain among the most distinctive and sought-after examples of American studio furniture from the 20th century.
