About the Item

Exquisitely handcrafted by Amitābha Studio in Amsterdam from an antique Géo Martel vase (circa 1900–1920) attributed to the celebrated faience maker of Desvres, Théodore is a one-of-a-kind table lamp. The vase, bearing the red “LF/5/1” mark modeled after De Metaale Pot, is a superb example of early 20th-century French Delft-style chinoiserie revival. We’ve paired the base with a bespoke drum lampshade in forest green satin. The lamp was created without harming the original vase in any way. Théodore showcases the prized “cashmere” palette of iron red, cobalt blue, and verdant green, delicately accented with touches of golden ochre on a warm ivory ground. This refined coloration echoes the luxurious patterning of Indian cashmere shawls and draws from the esteemed De Metaale Pot tradition, blending Chinese Famille Verte motifs with French Baroque ornamentation. Painted vignettes feature riverside landscapes with boats and pagodas, stylized flora, and chinoiserie figures in Eastern attire, all framed by scrolling foliate borders. Géo Martel’s ceramics stand apart for their historical fidelity and technical excellence. Working in Desvres from around 1900 to 1940, Martel specialized in high-quality Delft-style faience, emulating 17th-century Dutch masters like Lambertus van Eenhoorn. His dedication to authenticity included the use of imitation Delft marks, which positioned his work as both homage and scholarly revival. Théodore is an elegant synthesis of historical reverence and modern craftsmanship. This distinguished table lamp will resonate with collectors of antique ceramics, connoisseurs of European design heritage, and interior decorators seeking a singular statement piece. ⸻ Please note: The lamp is fully wired for use in the U.S. Additionally, the listed height includes the lampshade. We also ensure compatibility for global use by offering a free plug customization service to match the electrical standards of your specific country. For U.S. customers: Any new tariff-related surcharges are already included in our shipment costs. We take care of these fees in advance so there are no unexpected charges upon delivery. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us! ⸻ About Géo Martel, Desvres: Desvres, a town in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France, became a center for faience in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Among its most esteemed artisans was Georges Martel—known as Géo Martel—who operated from around 1900 to 1940. His ceramics stand out for their fidelity to 17th-century Dutch Delftware, often incorporating carefully crafted imitation marks to align his work with that legacy. Unlike more eclectic or mass-market Desvres potteries, Martel’s pieces are valued for their technical excellence and historical sensitivity. Today, his work is increasingly sought after for its authenticity, decorative strength, and quiet refinement. About Amitābha Studio: Amitābha Studio is an Amsterdam-based design atelier dedicated to transforming historic European ceramics into one-of-a-kind lighting objects. Each lamp is crafted with deep reverence for the original form, using non-invasive methods that preserve the integrity of every antique or vintage vase. We pair these bases with bespoke lampshades—often made from luxurious textiles such as vintage sari silks or fine European fabrics—and finish each piece with carefully selected cords, fittings, and handmade brass elements. Our work is guided by a commitment to sustainability, cultural heritage, and timeless design.
