About the Item

Amazing and beautiful table lamp, model 3064, designed by Daniela Puppa for Fontana Arte. Daniela Puppa reduces the piece to its basic forms, two inverted trapezoids make up the neck and the shade, two pieces of frosted glass, amber and white, on a cast iron base that stabilizes the whole. The frosted glass technique is achieved through the application of chemical substances that create an opaque layer that gives a translucent appearance. The final effect of the frosted technique in this piece allows the double lighting system to be hidden (four bulbs arranged in a criss-cross pattern and two others in the base). It also has a double switch, one for the upper part of the lamp and another for the lower part. The designer's signature, the model number, year of manufacture and the firm to which it belongs (Fontana Arte) are found on the iron base. Along with the frosted technique, the glass of the upper panel of the lamp has been subjected to the technique of bent glass. This technique consists of joining two pieces of glass with different characteristics such as size, texture and colour. Both pieces are joined together either through the application of heat or polyvinyl butyral and the subsequent application of pressure and heat. In this way, the result is a more resistant piece, in addition to the play of colours that it allows. Daniela Puppa was an architect, however, due to her connection with Italian avant-garde movements such as the Memphis Milano and Studio Alchimia groups, she ventured into the design of pieces for interior decoration. It was in the 1980s when she began to design pieces for the prestigious Italian firm Fontana Arte, specialising in the production of furniture and lamps. About Fontana Arte The history of Fontana Arte is a story of constant reinvention, rooted in the tradition of Italian design and a deep relationship with art, architecture and glass craftsmanship. It all began in 1881, when Luigi Fontana founded the Vetreria Fontana glass factory in Milan. Over the years, the family-run company built its reputation for creating exceptional glass products, but it was in the following decades that the brand would make its leap to international fame. The path to rebranding began to take shape in the early decades of the 20th century, especially after Vetreria Fontana's participation in the Milan International Exhibition in 1906, a momentous event that marked the company's consolidation in the field of decorative glass. The most significant turning point occurred in 1932, when architect and designer Gio Ponti joined the company. Their collaboration not only transformed the brand's production, but was also the one that cemented the name Fontana Arte as a synonym for avant-garde design. It was during this period that Ponti began to merge artisanal glass traditions with the principles of modernism. The post-Second World War period was crucial for the firm's evolution. Under Ponti’s direction, the brand diversified its approach, combining glass with new materials such as metal and aluminium to create new shapes and structures. Gae Aulenti, who also worked closely with Fontana Arte, was a key figure in modernising the company’s design. Aulenti introduced a contemporary perspective that enriched Fontana Arte’s traditions, reflecting the transition towards a more industrial and conceptual design. In the 1960s and 1970s, Fontana Arte established itself as an international benchmark in lighting and furniture design. It emerged as a symbol of luxury and sophistication, exporting its creations globally. Today, Fontana Arte remains one of the most prestigious brands in the field of design.
