French Hunting Lodge Table Lamp in Mahogany and Polished Horn, 1970s
This sculptural French table lamp, produced in the late 1970s, draws from hunting lodge aesthetics while engaging a restrained, material-focused sensibility. The composition centres on a base of hand-turned solid mahogany, carved in a concentric bullseye motif — a grounding element for the upward movement of a spiralled water buffalo horn, polished but retaining its natural irregularity.
At the horn’s crest, a minimal brass gallery supports a frosted glass globe, which diffuses light into a soft, ambient glow. The balance of contrasting materials — the warmth of hardwood, the organic tactility of horn, the muted opalescence of glass — evokes a quietly considered approach to mid-century rustic lighting. The piece speaks to both post-war French design and the artisanal revival of natural forms seen in 1970s European decorative arts.
